Vaginal Lubricants So Enemy Sperm

Bern, Switzerland, the majority of vaginal lubrication is found to be toxic to sperm. For couples who are trying to become pregnant should not use any lubricants for lubricating the main enemy of the sperm.

Vaginal lubrication is not only used to treat vaginal dryness during intercourse, but also facilitate insertion of medical devices, especially when used for fertility treatments such as insemination.

Vaginal dryness is a problem that can affect women of all ages, although typically more common in women after menopause. Vaginal dryness experienced by about 17 percent of women between the ages of 18 to 50 years and with a higher number of postmenopausal women over 51 years.

But from 4 vaginal lubricants tested only one non-spermicidal, spermicidal agent that destroys the sperm membrane and decrease sperm motility or movement.

"Vaginal lubricants are available commercially in Switzerland quite toxic to sperm ejaculation," said Dr Alfred Senn, researchers from the Foundation for Andrology, Biology and Endocrinology of Reproduction, as quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (16/11/2010).

Dr. Senn and his colleagues monitor the viability of sperm Selma 24 hours after exposure to vaginal lubricant that is claimed as non-spermacidal. After 24 hours of note 3 of 4 gel used has been reduced sperm movement up to 88 percent.

The researchers found the compound contained in such lubricants is slightly acidic, so it will create a condition that is bad for sperm. Researchers also noted the possibility of other indirect effects of this lubricant gel that can make sperm to be slow.

Because the influence of movement and also can be toxic to sperm, the possible use of this vaginal lubrication will affect a person's chance of conceiving.

Dr. Mary Rosser from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City recommend for couples who are trying to become pregnant should not use any lubricants.

"Couples should be aware of potential toxicity (poison) from vaginal lubricant that has been commercially available. Because the lubricant is usually designed to overcome vaginal dryness, but they may not be designed for couples who are trying to conceive." said Dr. Senn.
